Childhood Christmas Memories During the Depression!

Simple Childhood Pleasures!
For her third birthday Sally Ann received the most glorious present in the neighborhood! A wicker doll carriage. She says: "It was the envy of all the little girl neighbors."

That was the last really nice, extravagant present that she received for most of
her childhood, as the crash hit and times were hard. There weren't many dolls of her own to fill the carriage, so Sally Ann had fun playing with the kitties in the carriage!

Sally Ann tries to keep Lindy the Cat in the carriage, whilst Lindy takes flight!
Lindy was named after Lindbergh the aviator.

In interviewing one of her neighbors years later, the neighbor said that little Sally Ann was famous for putting her hands on her hips, her head in your face, and saying "Don't you know nothin'?" The other little girl neighbor was quiet, so Sally Ann must have thought it necessary to ask.

Sally Ann with her sled.

Growing up in a family of boys with three older brothers, Sally Ann was a stubborn little girl who was determined to do everything her brothers would do. As she says "I was a dare-devil and did what the boys did, whether I could or not."

Sally Ann and her brothers' winter fun was going outside and playing in the snow. They skied and sledded down hill.

One year, Sally Ann's father traded his hand churned butter (printed with star butter print) at the local country store for orange hats, and that along with an orange for each, was their Christmas presents for all of the children.
Sally Ann went out with her brothers to sled down hill near their farm. The hill was icy on top and little Sally Ann took a running leap for a belly whopper run down the hill on her sled and got going really fast. As she neared the bottom of the hill, her brothers yelled "Duck!!!" Little Sally Ann ducked as well as she could as she whizzed under the barbed wire fence but still her orange hat was caught by its tassel and was left on the barbed wire fence until she could retrieve it!

Sally Ann came upon her sledding expertise at a young age. During the night, under the cover of darkness, Sally Ann went with her Mum and her Mum's neighborhood friends Mrs. Brown and other ladies. The adult ladies borrowed Mr. Brown's clothes and put them on over their own clothes to go sledding... kind of like snowpants. Her Mum would put Sally Ann on her back, have her hang on around her neck, and they would belly whopper all the way down the road, down the hill, into town. Sally Ann says that this was very exciting but that they only did this at night! The husbands all asked what were they were doing and why did they insist on doing it at night! They wouldn't tell them. The ladies didn't want to be seen during the light of day or let it be known that they had worn pants!

Another Christmas, when Sally Ann's father was out of work and the family wasn't going to have a whole lot for Christmas, a knock was heard at the door and a large package was found on the porch. The box said "From Santa Claus". Inside were presents for everyone in the family, including material to make a dress for Mum, a Mackinaw coat for one of the boys, red slippers for the baby brother, and a doll for Sally Ann! The school teacher from the little town school had arranged with Santa for this package to be specially delivered!

Times were hard during the Depression but Sally Ann says they didn't know anything different as most of her childhood was during the Depression. Sally Ann says that they were "happier than most people are today."

Sally Ann is Diane's Mum and Sarah's Grandmum!

A Christmas Calendar Inspired by Tasha Tudor, Day 17!

"The Days Until Christmas: Amelia's Favorite Things"
For years we have been inspired by our friend Tasha Tudor's doll families. Tasha Tudor made her dolls look so real and we know that they were real to her. Our dolls seem very real to us, too. Our doll families have many children, cousins, Mums, and Aunties who like to do all the favorite things that we like to do best!

Tasha Tudor wrote and illustrated "The Dolls' Christmas", a sweet book about two little girls and their family of dolls inviting friends and their dolls over for a special Christm
as dinner and marionette show. Tasha Tudor also featured one of her lovely dolls, in words and illustration, in her book "A is for Annabelle", a story that goes through the alphabet with Annabelle and her special favorite things. If you enjoy dolls you will love these books as much as The Corgyncombe Courant does!

Tasha Tudor created many delightfully fun Calendars for Christmas and Valentines Day.

Diane and her daughter Sarah were inspired by Tasha Tudor's Advent Calendars and delightful dolls, to make this Christmas Calender, "The Days Until Christmas: Amelia's Favorite Things". This is the 5th year that Diane and Sarah have made A Calendar to Count "The Days Until Christmas" featuring Amelia's Favorite Things. This edition of "The Days Until Christmas: Amelia's Favorite Things" was originally created in 2007 and we know you will enjoy it also this 2010 Christmastide Season! Amelia and her family like to celebrate all the special days throughout the year!

Everyday, starting December 1st, a new photograph should appear for the Christmas Calendar, however we ask your patience dear readers, as sometimes there might be a delay due to the weather (such as blizzards, ice storms, high winds and snow), technical difficulties, Finch Post delays, etc.

The Corgyncombe Courant doesn't have a set time when we add the photograph of the day to the Calendar, as there are many other tasks to do and animals to care for.

As it is a Christmas Calendar of Amelia's Favorite Things and Amelia is a doll who lives at Corgyncombe Cottage & Corg'ery, the photographs in the calendar are appropriately small.

How we look forward to celebrating Christmastide traditions and the many surprises as we
Count "The Days Until Christmas" with Amelia!

Two Tasha Tudor Inspired Giveaways!

Pink Luster and Yellowware, Some of Our Favorite Things!

Our Friends at Tasha Tudor and Family are having a fantastic Giveaway of six Pink Luster Tea Cups!In the photograph above are Diane and her doll Amelia's Dundee Cakes cooling from the oven. A pink luster tea cup is always so pretty!

The Corgyncombe Courant is also having a Tasha Tudor inspired Giveaway of a reproduction Yellowware Bowl with green seaweed decoration!

Tasha Tudor loved both pink luster and yellowware and they both appeared frequently in her illustrations.

In the photograph above you can see Diane's pink luster tea cup.
Beatrix Potter also featured pink luster in her illustrations.
A story that is always fun to revisit at Christmastide, and especially enjoyed by Tillie Tinkham of Corgyncombe, is "The Tailor of Gloucester", by Beatrix Potter. "The Tailor of Gloucester" was employed to make a coat and waistcoat for the Mayor of Gloucester's wedding, which was to take place on Christmas Day in the
morning. After he had cut them out, he went home and sent his cat out to get several things, including one penn'orth of cherry-coloured silk twist, to be used for one-and-twenty button-holes. Whilst the cat was away, the curious Tailor, upon hearing tip, tap, tip, tap, sets free the mice that the cat had captured under tea-cups. The Tailor became ill and Christmas was fast approaching. If you have never read "The Tailor of Gloucester" before, we are sure you will enjoy discovering who completes the coat and waistcoat, except for one button-hole with a little note attached stating "No More Twist". In Diane's photograph above, there is a charkha spindle of Diane's handspun silk. In the small bowl is cochineal for dyeing the silk a pleasant shade of cherry. Do you hear a tip, tap, tip, tap, tip?

Tillie Tinkham, Corgyncombe seamstress

Silk has been spun on the charkha spindle. The charkha is a delight to spin on! Diane's two-ply silk twist is in the upper compartment.

Elizabeth shows her sister Violet, and their bear Theodosia, some clothing choices for the fashionable bear in the Christmas Issue of "The Bouquet, A Journal for the Lady of Fashion", by Tasha Tudor. "The Bouquet" is a delightful publication that contains news, poetry, garden notes, fashions, the receipt of the month, music... and library items. The Library section lists in small volumes, the complete works of William Shakespeare. Amelia's library also boasts the complete works of Shakespeare in volumes just her size! Diane's Santa Claus that she speaks of in the Corgyncombe Courant's "Christmas Memories!" post, besides being Santa Claus was also a Shakespearean actor!

Elizabeth is thinking about where she put that fine piece of red material that would be perfect for a jacket for Theodosia, whilst Violet studies the fashions. Blue material is waiting to be made into a skirt, with scissors and thimble at the ready. Elizabeth used to model for the prestigious House of Bluebird, and now she is under the tutelage of Tillie Tinkham, of T. T.'s F. & F (Tillie Tinkham's Frocks and Fashions). Elizabeth is learning how to design and sew and she finds "The Bouquet" very interesting and helpful. Tillie Tinkham designed and made Elizabeth's charming apron.
The words for "The Holly and the Ivy" and an illustration of carolers are in "The Bouquet" by Tasha Tudor.

Carolers can also be seen and heard in "The Tailor of Gloucester", part of "The Word Peter Rabbit and Friends, Beatrix Potter".

In the video, the girl playing the violin and the child in the red hat both bear a striking resemblance to Sarah when she was little.

Waffles, Bread, and Soup from "The Tasha Tudor Cookbook"

Cornmeal, Syrup, and A Rose!
This last summer whilst visiting a friend, with vasculum in hand Diane collected a red rose growing in lovely profusion on his garden lattice. He demonstrated grinding corn into cornmeal and gave Diane a jar of the cornmeal and a jar of his homemade maple syrup!

In the photograph above the cornmeal has been sifted. Also, take note (in the upper right of the photograph) of the yellowware bowl with green seaweed decoration much like the one that is currently in the Corgyncombe Courant Giveaway!

On a cool, crisp Autumnal Day, using the receipt for Waffles in "The Tasha Tudor Cookbook" Diane made waffles over the open fire. How delicious they tasted in the fresh, outdoor air!!!
In the Tasha Tudor waffle receipt, Diane substituted cornmeal for flour.

Diane uses one of her yellowware bowls with green seaweed decoration, to mix the cornmeal waffle mixture. The Yellowware Bowl is similar to the one in the Corgyncombe Courant Giveaway! But as you can see, Dear Readers, they are all delightfully different, as the seaweed decoration gives each bowl it's own unique appearance! The yellowware with green seaweed gives such an old fashioned feel to all your old fashioned tasks!

The jar of delicious gifted maple syrup.

The red rose gathered from the lattice that has been pressed and dried.
Memories of sweet summer sunshine!

The receipt for the white bread is in "The Tasha Tudor Cookbook".

Waffles with homemade maple syrup!

Instead of the macaroni called for in the receipt "Corgi Cottage Soup" from "The Tasha Tudor Cookbook", Diane made her own noodles for the soup. The receipt for the noodles was in an "Americana" magazine.

The noodles are allowed to dry for a couple of hours.

The noodles are boiled and then added to Corgi Cottage Soup.
Delicious!!!
